Less than 10 years ago, the Philadelphia waterfront was transformed from a largely unused, desolate space into a lively, social setting. Many native Philadelphians are unacquainted with this new hangout, while many new Philadelphians are often unaware of the history of this destination. Instead, the park’s biggest attractors are its colorful, comfy hammocks that parkgoers often lounge in for hours at a time.

DWRC wanted to not only help all parkgoers have a better chance of enjoying some time in the hammocks, but also encourage them to get up and explore more of the park as well as other areas of the evolving waterfront.

Outcomes

  1. Collectable pin honor system: Reminiscent of the “I voted today” stickers, parkgoers can collect “I shared a hammock!” pins as a reward for showing kindness to others.

  2. Signage campaign: Encouraging mindfulness with a little fun, these signs embrace the spirit of the park and serve as gentle nudges for parkgoers to be considerate and limit their time lounging.

  3. Social media scavenger hunt: Parkgoers can participate in an instagram powered scavenger hunt, posting pictures and video based on clues about the history of the park. Winners will be selected to receive a special shout out from SSHP’s account seen by their 30K followers.

How might we encourage mindfulness at the park and expose more Philadelphians to its attractions?
